2018 Dec 09 Proverbs 9, Psalms

Welcome to all and warm wishes for a fine day! Wishing that all would be well with you and your family, and hoping for that day to come in God's due time! Let's pick up in Proverbs 9, verses 10-12:
"10 The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of wisdom, And knowledge of the Most Holy One is understanding. 11 For by me your days will be many, And years will be added to your life. 12 If you become wise, you are wise to your own advantage, But if you are a ridiculer, you alone will bear it."

Prov 9:10 Learning to respect and fear God properly is the proper motive for beginning to obtain divine wisdom. Recall also that the fear of Jehovah means the hating of bad. We must fear to displease God, fear hurting Him in any way by sinning against Him or others. Remember that God warns us from sin for our benefit--He knows the sad results of bad thinking, decisions and actions, and wants us to avoid such and find true happiness in life. Also, genuine knowledge is gained with understanding, aiming to see the big picture, and see how each piece fits in with the others. This is especially important with the gaining of divine knowledge.
Prov 9:11 By true wisdom we can happily hope in divine favor and endless life with a closeness to God, a loyal marriage partner, and earth-wide family and friends.
Prov 9:12 True wisdom acting in harmony with godly love looks out for the benefit of all persons, but certainly it also benefits ourselves, helping us find true success in life. However, starkly opposed to true wisdom is the practice of ridiculing or even reviling others. A fault-finder is not loving, and is not benefitting himself or others by his negative thinking. If he continues, he will actually bring much trouble and have to deal with the consequences.

The acrostic 119th Psalm uses the 9th letter of the Hebrew alphabet to start each of next 8 verses:
"65 You have dealt well with your servant, O Jehovah, according to your word. 66 Teach me good sense and knowledge, For I have put my trust in your commandments. 67 Before I was afflicted, I used to go astray, But now I keep your saying. 68 You are good and your works are good. Teach me your regulations. 69 The presumptuous smear me with lies, But I observe your orders with all my heart. 70 Their heart is insensitive, But I am fond of your law. 71 It is good that I have been afflicted, So that I may learn your regulations. 72 The law that you have proclaimed is good for me, More so than thousands of pieces of gold and silver."

In verse 67, the psalmist had for a time been "afflicted," but by what he had to endure, he learned the value of heeding God's counsel. In verse 69, he shows that we may at times be the recipient of false slander by presumptuous trouble-makers, or false witnesses, among the things God hates, as recorded in Proverbs 6:16-19. Nevertheless, the psalmist was determined to continue obeying God's orders, bringing His support, favor and blessing. Perhaps he needed courage to do so, as we may pray for boldness. (Acts 4:29). While some hearts may be "insensitive," perhaps our example of kindness, compassion and Christian mildness, even while under attack by others, may move some to react more favorably. While we may need money to sustain us, God's law is truly far better for us, since keeping it can lead us to eternal life, something money cannot buy.
