2018 Nov 10 Proverbs 10, Psalms, 1Corinthians 10
Good day to you! Let's consider a few of the proverbial sayings of Proverbs 10. For commentary on verses 1-5, search "Oct 10". Let's consider verses 6-10.
"6 Blessings are on the head of the righteous one, But the mouth of the wicked conceals violence. 7 The memory of the righteous one is due for a blessing, But the name of the wicked will rot. 8 The wisehearted person will accept instructions, But the one speaking foolishly will be trodden down. 9 The one walking in integrity will walk in security, But the one making his ways crooked will be found out. 10 The one who slyly winks his eye causes grief, And the one who speaks foolishly will be trodden down."
Prov 10:6 Those pursuing a right course will have God's blessing on their efforts and activity. "It is the blessing of Jehovah that makes one rich, and he adds no pain with it." (Prov 10:22). Those bad at heart, however, may deceptively speak truth, covering over their violent hatred for others.
Prov 10:7 Making a good name with God, seeking His honor before our own, pursuing His will first in life, will bring His blessing and allow us to have a good reputation before God-fearing persons, a name with God that can last into eternity. Putting Him first, God 'opens His hand and satisfies the desire of every living thing.' (Psal 145:16).
Prov 10:8 As we grow in godly wisdom, we gain a wise heart that can accept and appreciate God's guidance. Foolishness, on the other hand, does not contribute to respect for God's law, and those unrepentantly holding to a foolish course will ultimately lose out on life.
Prov 10:9 We need to learn to keep integrity to God, holding to His right standards in life in spite of trials. We thus walk in security under God's spiritual protection, looking forward to life under His rule, essentially free of ungodly pressure to violate His standards.
Prov 10:10 Such ones, showing partiality, concealing hatred for others, cause much grief, such ones should shun deception and trickery, and appreciate God's love for them, moving them to walk God's way with an honest heart, speaking the truth in their heart. (Psal 15:1,2)
Psal 51 (Book 2, 10th psalm) is David's repentant prayer over his serious sins. Perhaps those pursuing an errant course in life may be moved by David's sincerity, appreciating God's mercy, to consider looking further into God's word for godly wisdom and true happiness. He pleaded, at Psal 51:1,2 "Show me favor, O God, according to your loyal love. Blot out my transgressions according to your great mercy. 2 Thoroughly wash me from my error, And cleanse me from my sin." David still suffered much for his serious error, but did receive of God's forgiveness, restoring His relationship with God.
In 1Corinthians 10, God's word encourages us to avoid falling to sinful practices. Regarding the Israelites before entering the Promised Land, 1Cor 10:5-8 says: "Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them, for they were struck down in the wilderness. 6 Now these things became examples for us, in order for us not to desire injurious things, as they desired them. 7 Neither become idolaters, as some of them did; just as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink. Then they got up to have a good time.” 8 Neither let us practice sexual immorality, as some of them committed sexual immorality, only to fall, 23,000 of them in one day." Verse 11 adds: "Now these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for a warning to us upon whom the ends of the systems of things have come." May we take to heart such warnings, pondering the sad consequences of disobedience, that we may hate what is bad and cling to what is good. Prophetically speaking of God's son, Psal 45:7 says "You loved righteousness, and you hated wickedness." May we follow the example of Jesus in being loyal and obedient to God and His law, walking faithfully with Him, having His smile of approval and setting the right example for others, encouraging them to find and remain on the road to everlasting life, for most in a peaceful Paradise under God's rulership.
