2019 Nov 29 Ninth (False Testimony) of the Ten, 3John 1

Hello, wishing you well, grateful for what we do have, and trusting God for what we really need, and for coping with any disappointments! Let's now consider the ninth of the Ten Commandments, and then some thoughts from 3John 1.

Let’s now consider Exodus 20:16: “16 “You must not testify falsely when you are a witness against your fellow man.”

TAKEN SERIOUSLY. Should this command be taken lightly? It comes just after the command not the steal. Would someone think it’s okay to rob a bank? Clearly, then, this matter should be taken seriously—we should not bear false testimony, whether or not the one we are testifying against is truly guilty or innocent. We must remember that this is the living word of God we are talking about. He takes this matter seriously Himself, and can back it up! If we’re frightened at all at what may happen if our testimony helps bring justice to one committing a serious crime, can we not look to Jehovah God as a “refuge” for our “protection?” Of course, we hope the wrongdoer would mean no further harm. Still, our faith in God must be genuine. As Jesus once told someone: “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” (Luke 7:50). We should genuinely trust in God, praying fervently about the matter, often and sincerely, considering any steps we might take or help we might receive to protect ourselves, and leave the outcome in God's hands. (Matth 7:7-11). Notice, for instance, Psalm 46:1 says “46 God is our refuge and strength, A help that is readily found in times of distress. 2 That is why we will not fear, though the earth undergoes change, Though the mountains topple into the depths of the sea, 3 Though its waters roar and foam over, Though the mountains rock on account of its turbulence.” With Jehovah’s watchcare, fear need not grip us. Recall Jonah’s experience! He was to speak in the name of Jehovah a judgement against the capital city of the violent nation of Assyria. Rather than trusting in Jehovah, he ran the other way! But Jehovah taught Him about His great power to save him from the depths of the sea by a great sea creature! Surely if Jehovah can do that, He could protect him from the mighty Assyrian empire to speak, not Jonah’s message, but Jehovah God’s message! Notice also Proverbs 18:1, saying: “10 The name of Jehovah is a strong tower. Into it the righteous one runs and receives protection.”

USING GOD'S NAME. We note two things here. A reference is made to Jehovah’s glorious and mighty NAME. Shouldn't we use this name when praying to our Father, especially when we’re looking for His assistance in such a serious matter? Why, was not God’s name of prime importance in Jesus’ model prayer, at Matthew 6:9-13? “9 You must pray, then, this way: “‘Our Father in the heavens, let your name be sanctified.” God’s name is to be “sanctified”—highly esteemed, set apart as holy—not ignored!(compare Luke 4:17-18; Isaiah 61:1; John 17:6,26).The church should NEVER have substituted the name of Jehovah with the expression “LORD,” although they too may have been threatened, perhaps by Satan, to do so. Still, Jehovah is the "Sovereign LORD" Scripturally, so there may be nothing wrong with referring to Him as our LORD occasionally, as long as we do not confuse Him with His Son, Jesus. (Isaiah 61:1; 25:8; comp. to Revel 21:3,4). We should see that our children, also, are not confused. Satan knew how powerful the name of Jehovah is, but so do we! Jehovah WANTS us to use His mighty name when we speak to Him—why in the ORIGINAL Bible manuscripts this name is recorded over 7,000 times! Jehovah is “God the Father” and Jesus Christ is “Lord to the glory of God the Father” (1Cori 8:6; Phili 2:11) May we seek the glory of God by using His powerful name Jehovah, exalting it above all the other gods of man’s making.

RECEIVING GOD'S HELP. But it should be acknowledged, that while Jehovah’s name is so powerful, it is still more than just a superstitious good-luck charm. If we want to look to Jehovah for protection, we should also accept His advice and guidance. We should recognize that His ways are the ways of eternal happiness—ours and everyone else’s. Notice it is “the righteous one” that runs into the “strong tower” of Jehovah’s name and “receives protection.” Would not one standing up for truth and the side of what is right by refusing to lie under oath, or to bear false testimony, have Jehovah’s smile of approval? Still, why not REASONABLY continue to seek to live by God’s other standards, looking to the ransom sacrifice of Jesus Christ to cover past sins in God’s abundant mercy, seeking God’s forgiveness and turning from any evil course of serious sin? What blessings are in store for those choosing God’s way of life!

TREASURING GOD'S WORD. God’s word records such sentiments as in Proverbs 2:20-22: “20 So follow the way of good people And stay on the paths of the righteous, 21 For only the upright will reside in the earth, And the blameless will remain in it. 22 As for the wicked, they will be cut off from the earth, And the treacherous will be torn away from it.” What will help us heed such counsel? Jesus stated at Matthew 4:4 “It is written: ‘Man must live, not on bread alone, but on every word that comes from Jehovah’s mouth.’” Psalm 1:1-3 likewise encourages us: “1 Happy is the man who does not walk according to the advice of the wicked And does not stand on the path of sinners And does not sit in the seat of scoffers. 2 But his delight is in the law of Jehovah, And he reads His law in an undertone day and night. 3 He will be like a tree planted by streams of water, A tree that produces fruit in its season, The foliage of which does not wither. And everything he does will succeed.” May we find happiness and success by loving God’s word of truth, and letting it’s words sink deep into our hearts by pondering upon them, considering why they’re so beneficial and how we can apply them to our life—a course leading to everlasting life!

3John 1:1-4 greets Gaius, one "walking in the truth." Brothers came to John and bore witness about Gaius' sincerity in serving God and following Christ, causing John to rejoice "very much." May we likewise rejoice to see others faithfully serving God, refusing to violate their Bible-trained Christian conscience. John's encouraging words read this way: "1 The older man to Gaʹius, the beloved, whom I truly love. 2 Beloved one, I pray that in all things you continue to prosper and enjoy good health, just as you are now prospering. 3 For I rejoiced very much when brothers came and bore witness about the truth you hold, as you go on walking in the truth. 4 No greater joy do I have than this: that I should hear that my children go on walking in the truth." John had developed a close bond of brotherly affection for Gaius, calling him "beloved one" in verses 2,5, and 11. May our sincere Christian "obedience to the truth," purifying us and bringing about true unity, in time allow for genuine "brotherly affection" in the truth. As Peter encouraged at 1Peter 1:22, "Now that you have purified yourselves by your obedience to the truth with unhypocritical brotherly affection as the result, love one another intensely from the heart."

3John 11 John addresses Gaius further in verse 11, after speaking of someone selfishly seeking glory for himself, rather than seeking God's glory by humbly obeying Him, stating: "Beloved one, do not imitate what is bad, but imitate what is good. The one who does good originates with God. The one who does bad has not seen God." So even if someone in authority should do something bad, we are encouraged not to imitate the badness, but rather imitate the good we know and have seen in God's word or by others. It is Psalm 97:10 which says: "O you who love Jehovah, hate what is bad. He is guarding the lives of his loyal ones; He rescues them from the hand of the wicked." So we should learn to hate, not the people so much who can change, but the badness itself, whatever it may be, in time seeking to understand why it is bad, knowing God always has good reason to warn us against something that brings certain spiritual or physical harm to us or others. We thus develop the wholesome regard for Jehovah, "the fear of God" which "means the hating of bad." (Prove 8:13). That verse continues with some real losers: "I hate self-exaltation (seeking one's own glory and praise, perhaps even more than God's) and pride (considering oneself superior to others) and the evil way and perverse (or, corrupt) speech." May we develop such wholesome hatred for all badness, including lies that threaten the very trust that is the basis for good relationships, between parents and their children, other family members and friends. How God's word helps us safeguard the makings of true peace and happiness!
