FINDING GEMS! Philippians 4:4 continues this thought, exhorting "Always rejoice in the Lord. Again I will say, Rejoice!" (v.4) Paul was then inspired to acknowledge our reasonableness, perhaps showing that our joy should be more in our heart than in making a spectacle of ourselves before the world. (v.5) Verse 8 continues with a list of standards that should govern our choices regarding what we feed our minds and hearts, to safeguard ourselves from corruption. We should seek to grasp the scope of these beneficial standards, and be cautious about careful study of things in violation of them. The verse reads as follows: "8 Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are of serious concern, whatever things are upright, whatever things are chaste, whatever things are lovable, whatever things are well-spoken-of, whatever virtue there is, and whatever praiseworthy thing there is, continue considering these things." Paul was addressing material that was suitable for consideration within the congregation of God, but the principles of God's word do permit more allowance regarding other things we choose to feed our minds and hearts upon. The key to this understanding may lie in the mention of things "of serious concern." Such things are to be among those carefully studied, as in a congregation setting, but NOT meant to confine all of our conversations or listening and viewing choices! Even in a congregation there should be occasional smiles and laughter as joyful people congregate for study! Congregation study is more geared for examination of important spiritual matters, although considering such things contribute to deep-seated joy (Galatians 5:22-23). In the home, however, occasional or regular comedic entertainment can lift spirits! Surely God wants us to enjoy life! Ecclesiastes 10:19a says "Bread is made for laughter, and wine makes life enjoyable..."Any such entertainment, however, should be well-motivated, still supporting what is "true," "chaste," and so forth. We might ask, "What are the lessons learned, by listening or watching this program?" Or, "What is the effect on the heart, giving this consideration?" We needn't feel deprived--there are several gems of education and entertainment that have been produced over the years that are reasonably in complete, or nearly complete harmony with God's word and standards! This is true of reading material, music, television and movies, both older and modern. We should, however, use discernment to carefully judge whether we have a true gem, or a cheap imitation. Is it based on, or supporting, genuine truth, and such upright and godly standards? Find economical or convenient sources, or ways to find sources, of such entertainment, appreciating the good enjoyment or lessons being heard or viewed, but disregarding anything that seriously violates what is good. May we place higher priority on God's word and spiritual things, leading us to everlasting life!

MOSAIC LAW HIGHLIGHTS

CHRISTIAN STANDARD: PRINCIPLED LOVE IS MOVED BY EMPATHY IN DEALING WITH OTHERS

PUTTING OURSELVES IN THEIR PLACE. Matthew 7:12 reveals the Golden Rule, saying: "All things, therefore, that you want men to do to you, you also must do to them. This, in fact, is what the Law and the Prophets mean." The Mosaic Law and the teaching of the Prophets were based on this treasured principle. Luke 6:31 words it this way: "...Just as you want men to do to you, do the same way to them." How do we do this? What would we like others to say to us, or to do for us? Can we say or do those things for this person? True compassion and love for others will make this possible. It helps to practice having compassion or empathy for others, putting ourselves in their place, or in their shoes, that we may comprehend their situation or circumstance. Then we can fathom how we would like to be treated if we were in their place. But what we need to understand perhaps most is that we should consider ourselves an extension of God's hand in what we do for others, to His glory and praise. Our motive should be clean and pure. Any gifts or talents we possess come from our loving God, and should be used in a way that reflects honor to Him. Romans 8:28 says "We know that God makes all his works cooperate together for the good of those who love God..." Of course, God wants us to be loved and appreciated! But using compassion selfishly to seek attention, immoral affection, or glory for ourselves does not meet with God's approval. True compassion is a gift from God, motivated in harmony with true Christian love, making us happy to be used by God to help others--to be exercised toward God and one another for the true and lasting happiness and benefit of all! Who doesn't take delight in a kind word at the right time, or a gift from someone that meets a genuine need? All of this is possible if compassion is exercised in a godly way! I once coined a term "compection" to encapsulate this notion of guiding our compassion to assist others in a truly beneficial way that shows agreement ("pact" or "pect") with God's law--helping them see that the answer to their distress or situation truly is within God's law--the genuine law--and not without it, or outside of it! May we treasure God's ways of purity, genuine love and compassion, realizing the truth stated by Jehosha or Jesus that there is "more happiness in giving than there is in receiving." (ACTs 20:35).
