2018 Nov 27 Psalms, 1John 2
Hello to all! Wishing you well this day. Let's take a look at books 1 and 2 of Psalms, beginning with Psalm 27:4-6:
"4 One thing I have asked from Jehovah—It is what I will look for—That I may dwell in the house of Jehovah all the days of my life, To gaze upon the pleasantness of Jehovah And to look with appreciation upon his temple. 5 For he will hide me in his shelter on the day of calamity; He will conceal me in the secret place of his tent; High on a rock he will place me. 6 Now my head is high above my enemies who surround me; I will offer sacrifices at his tent with joyful shouting; I will sing praises to Jehovah."
Psalm 27:4 May we appreciate God's arrangements for true worship in the time we're living in, making sure the Bible is made available earth-wide, and making possible an accurate understanding of God's word of truth by a careful study of it. Surely true Christian unity is being made possible in these last days, as was the case in the first century. Notice how this is shown by Paul, at 1Corinthians 1:10: "Now I urge you, brothers, through the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you should all speak in agreement and that there should be no divisions among you, but that you may be completely united in the same mind and in the same line of thought." So those who would be true Christians today will look to God, his word, and the word and example of Christ to find and recognize the ring of truth today. (Isai 2:2-4).
Psalm 27:5,6 May we not get unduly anxious over the opinions or threats of men, but keep our trust in God foremost, as right-hearted ones as a group will be preserved through the great tribulation, God having the power of salvation for His servants. As 2Peter 2:9 says: "So, then, Jehovah knows how to rescue people of godly devotion out of trial, but to reserve unrighteous people to be destroyed on the day of judgment."
Psalm 68 (Book 2, 27th psalm) refers to God, in verses 5,6, in this way: "A father of the fatherless and a protector of widows Is God in his holy dwelling. 6 God gives those who are alone a home to dwell in; He leads prisoners out into prosperity. But the stubborn must live in a parched land." May we not be "stubborn" as those ignoring God's will and seeking only their own selfish interests. Rather, may we humble ourselves before God, learning His way of life and growing in the knowledge of God, using divine knowledge to benefit others and ourselves, spiritually and in other ways.
1John 2:1-4 has much to say. We read: "My little children, I am writing you these things so that you may not commit a sin. And yet, if anyone does commit a sin, we have a helper with the Father, Jesus Christ, a righteous one. 2 And he is a propitiatory sacrifice for our sins, yet not for ours only but also for the whole world’s. 3 And by this we realize that we have come to know him, namely, if we continue observing his commandments. 4 The one who says, “I have come to know him,” and yet does not observe his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in this person."
So we need to learn obedience as we come to trust the guidance of God and Christ. Our merciful Father is loving as we maintain determination to keep His commandments. The sacrifice of Christ can cover our errors. May we maintain our hold on truth, and not fall to believing that obedience is somehow unnecessary. We receive salvation based on our faith in God and Christ, and in the ransom sacrifice to cover our sins, while we strive to obey God and Christ, realizing that this leads to peaceful relations among others, ultimately to a peaceful new world, a literal and spiritual Paradise as God originally purposed.
