2019 Feb 27 Psalm 27, 106, 2Timothy 1
Hello, wishing you well this day! Let’s consider Psalm 27, this time verses 9-11:
“ 9 Do not hide your face from me. Do not turn your servant away in your anger. You are my helper; Do not forsake me or leave me, my God of salvation.10 Even if my own father and mother abandon me, Jehovah himself will take me in.11 Instruct me in your way, O Jehovah, Lead me in the path of uprightness because of my foes.”
Psalm 27:9 The psalmist David pleads with Jehovah not to be angry with him, perhaps over past mistakes, but determined to be obedient, seeks Jehovah’s help as His “God of salvation.” Even sins we are “unaware of” are sins nonetheless, which can bring Jehovah’s displeasure. We should earnestly seek Jehovah’s guidance and his mercy wherever necessary. Psalm 103 says: “13 As a father shows mercy to his sons, Jehovah has shown mercy to those who fear him.” Thus may we continue to properly “fear” Jehovah, turning away from bad so as not to displease Him in any way.
Psalm 27:10 How reassuring to one who may have lost both parents in some way. Jehovah himself would be One to care for someone in that plight. Jehovah takes our treatment of “orphans and widows” very seriously, considering loving treatment of such ones as a hallmark of true Christianity. James 1:27 says “27 The form of worship that is clean and undefiled from the standpoint of our God and Father is this: to look after orphans and widows in their tribulation, and to keep oneself without spot from the world.” May we never disregard such words, but strive to imitate the loving concern Jehovah has for such ones, as well as keeping our distance from any moral filth stemming from the ungodly aspect of the world around us.
Psalm 27:11 David shows his desire to be instructed by Jehovah, not simply being forgiven and continuing on a wrong path. He realizes that actually obeying God on the path of uprightness is a protection against the efforts of his foes to oppose him. Such foes, disobeying God themselves, may try to turn right-hearted ones against God. How we should stay on guard from any disobedience, maintaining our love for Him! As 1John 5:3 reminds us, “3 For this is what the love of God means, that we observe his commandments; and yet his commandments are not burdensome.”
Psalm 106:41-44 explains God’s dealings with Israel due to their falling to idolatry and false worship. Notice his strong correction: “41 He repeatedly handed them over to the nations, So that those who hated them might rule over them. 42 Their enemies oppressed them, And they were subject to their power. 43 Many times he rescued them, But they would rebel and disobey, And they would be brought low for their error. 44 But he would see their distress And hear their cry for help.“
So Jehovah, as He had warned them if they would disobey, gave strong reproof to them, letting them fall into the hands of their enemies, being oppressed by them. (Deute 8:19,20). But He would rescue them, seeing their distress and hearing their cry for help. He hoped in their turning around and obeying Him fully once again. May we have determination to trust and obey God implicitly, knowing His guidance is for even our own benefit and happiness.
2Timothy 1:1-5 reveals the brotherly affection that is possible between faithful Christian servants of God, as Paul had with Timothy, loved like a son. Notice Paul’s expressions of affection and love for Timothy: “1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by God’s will according to the promise of the life that is through Christ Jesus, 2 to Timothy, a beloved child: May you have undeserved kindness, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.3 I am grateful to God, to whom I am rendering sacred service as my forefathers did, and with a clean conscience, never ceasing to remember you in my supplications night and day. 4 As I remember your tears, I am longing to see you, so that I may get filled with joy. 5 For I recall your unhypocritical faith, which dwelled first in your grandmother Loʹis and your mother Euʹnice, but which I am confident is also in you.”
May we likewise come to have an unhypocritical faith, sincerely applying our hearts to all the guidance we receive from God and Christ, treasuring purity of heart, having upright motives in our dealings with others. What a privilege to serve the true God among His clean Christian servants earth-wide! As we change from a past sinful course, may we ever appreciate God’s mercy to allow us a place with His people. May we never take this for granted! As 1Peter 1:14-16 says “14 As obedient children, stop being molded by the desires you formerly had in your ignorance, 15 but like the Holy One who called you, become holy yourselves in all your conduct, 16 for it is written: “You must be holy, because I am holy.”” God’s holiness means He is never abusive or mistreating humans, but dealing with the utmost love and interest in the welfare of all humanity, doing what benefits all the most. May we appreciate and imitate God’s purity of heart, humbly representing God well before others, upholding His great name, or reputation, as the loving and just Father that He is.
