2019 Jan 06 Proverbs 6, Psalms, Matthew 6
Hi, and welcome to another day, wishing you happiness! You might notice a new article to the website, under MISC. Let's continue with Proverbs 6, verses 20-23:
"20 Observe, my son, the commandment of your father, And do not forsake the instruction of your mother. 21 Always bind them around your heart; Tie them about your neck. 22 When you walk about, it will lead you; When you lie down, it will stand guard over you; And when you awaken, it will speak to you. 23 For the commandment is a lamp, And the law is a light, And the reproofs of discipline are the way to life."
Prove 6:20 One of the Ten Commandments written on Stone Tablets, distinct from the "handwritten document that consisted of decrees and was in opposition to us" that was done away with by Jesus' impalement, includes one that applies to the relationship between child and parents. (Colos 2:14). It is the fifth commandment, at Exodus 20:12: "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live a long time in the land that Jehovah your God is giving you." The apostle Paul also quotes this command at Ephesians 6:2, saying it "is the first command with a promise." The very first proverb of chapter 10 says "A wise son makes his father rejoice, but a foolish son is the grief of his mother." What understanding child wants to bring grief to his own mother? Should he or she prefer wisdom, or foolishness? Growing in wisdom brings delight to a good parent. So the counsel to listen to their instruction, which can be life-saving to a child! There are many dangers in life, especially to an inexperienced child, needing guidance and correction from loving parents! May every child learn to appreciate the instruction coming from parents who love him or her.
Prove 6:21,22 Binding the commandments and instruction from parents around your heart means they affect your very heartfelt thoughts and actions. Tied around your neck means these affect the words coming through your throat, your very speech. "Out of the heart's abundance his mouth speaks." (Luke 6:45). The law of God as explained by parents will guide a youth in the right way, stand guard over him--offering protection from much danger, and being ultimately from God, speaks to his heart in line with truth.
Prove 6:23 Each commandment sheds light on a given situation, the entire law being a light that shines on our entire life, and shines ahead upon the path of life, helping us see what's coming, and the rewards of keeping the law, and may also enlighten us as to the problems, troubles, grief and pain of violating God's word and law. The reproofs, or strong corrections, of discipline are the way to life. How we all need God's loving discipline in life, to help us stay on the path leading to endless life in true happiness, seeking ever to remain on it, being an example and encouragement to our friends and loved ones to maintain their hope and happiness.
Psalm 78 (Book 3, 6th psalm) is 72 verses long. It opens this way: "Listen, my people, to my law; Incline your ear to the words of my mouth. 2 I will open my mouth in a proverb. I will propound riddles of long ago." Verse 4 says: "...We will relate to the generation to come the praiseworthy deeds of Jehovah and his strength, the wonderful things he has done." By relating these things, verse 7 says "Then these would put their confidence in God. They would not forget God's works but would observe his commandments." In the wilderness, God continued to provide for Israel what they needed, coming to their aid, and protecting them from danger. Still, they rebelled and hurt God's feelings, as verses 40,41 relate: "How often they rebelled against Him in the wilderness and made Him feel hurt in the desert! Again and again they put God to the test, and they grieved the Holy One of Israel." Verse 42 explains: "They did not remember his power, the day that He rescued them from the adversary." May we be ever mindful of God's saving power, as we prayerfully look to Him for guidance and direction in our life, as well as for spiritual protection and salvation, as we seek to do His will. May we therefore appreciate the privilege of representing God before others, sharing our hope at times with those in need. May all come to know the greatness of God's name, and the rightfulness of His Sovereign rulership over mankind, far grander than any human efforts to rule alone.
Matthew 6 continues the subject of prayer in verses 7,8: "When praying, do not say the same things over and over again as the people of the nations do, for they imagine they will get a hearing for their use of many words. 8 So do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need even before you ask him."
According to these verses, does God want us to engage in repetitive prayers by rote, the same words over and over again? Does not God know what we're needing? Clearly, He treasures sincerity in our prayers, rather than repetitious words. Still, He does want us to be persistent. Matthew 7:7 says "Keep on asking, and it will be given; keep on seeking, and you will find; keep on knocking, and it will be opened to you." So let's be persistent in our requests to God, that He may see the importance of matters to us, but with sincerity of heart, not merely with mental repetition.
