2019 Jan 25 Psalms, 1Thessalonians 5
Hello with a warm welcome! Let's begin by continuing the acrostic of Psalm 25, written by King David, this time verses 11-15:
ל [Lamed]11 For the sake of your name, O Jehovah, Forgive my error, though it is great.
מ [Mem]12 Who is the man fearing Jehovah? He will instruct him about the way he should choose.
.נ [Nun]13 He will experience what is good, And his descendants will take possession of the earth.
ס [Samekh]14 Close friendship with Jehovah belongs to those who fear him, And he makes his covenant known to them.
ע [Ayin]15 My eyes are always toward Jehovah, For he will free my feet from the net.
Psalm 25:11 David evidently had repented over his serious mistakes, trusting in God's merciful treatment. While Jehovah forgave him, he still suffered much due to his errors--by the mouth of the prophet Nathan, Jehovah pronounced: “Here I am raising up against you calamity out of your own house.” (2Samu 12:1-12). Having many problems in his family, he had to also go into hiding again, and endured two of his own sons unfaithfully trying to usurp the throne, causing David public disgrace. Still, he remained faithful to Jehovah the remainder of his life, gathering supplies for his heart's desire to build Jehovah the temple at Jerusalem, which his son Solomon would carry out.
Psalm 25:12,13 One fearing God, rightfully respecting Him and greatly desiring not to displease Him in any way, may receive of God's instructions through His word and otherwise, to carry out the will of Jehovah. Such a person "will experience what is good." He will be righteously inclined, gaining in "the wisdom from above," and eager to instruct his own children in the path of endless life.
Psalm 25:14 A good verse showing that fearing God is no morbid dread, but rather allows for "close friendship with Jehovah," with God disclosing things such as "his covenant" that many are not yet able to fully comprehend or understand.
Psalm 25:15 Jehovah loves His people, and is eager to save them from the snares of the wicked. Evil ones will often be ensnared in their own traps. Psalm 35:7 and 7:15 say "For without cause they have hidden a net to trap me; Without cause they have dug a pit for me." "He excavates a pit and digs it deep, But he falls into the very hole he made." And 2Peter 2:9 says "So, then, Jehovah knows how to rescue people of godly devotion out of trial, but to reserve unrighteous people to be destroyed on the day of judgment." One chapter later, however, 2Peter 3:9 says "Jehovah is not slow concerning his promise, as some people consider slowness, but he is patient with you because he does not desire anyone to be destroyed but desires all to attain to repentance." Jehovah does not desire for anyone to lose out on His wonderful blessings of a Paradise Earth enjoyed loving Him and others with a loyal marriage mate and true friends earth-wide for all eternity!
Psalm 89 (Book 3, 17th psalm, continued) Verses 30-33 remark what would happen if the sons of God's chosen one would leave God's law, in spite of God's blessing upon his king. These verses read: "If his sons leave my law And do not walk according to my decrees, 31 If they violate my statutes And do not keep my commandments, 32 Then I will punish their disobedience with a rod And their error with flogging. 33 But I will never abandon my loyal love for him Nor be untrue to my promise." How fine if his sons, however, are lovingly taught in the way Proverbs 22:6 describes: "Train a boy in the way he should go; Even when he grows old he will not depart from it." Nevertheless, God's loyal love will remain for his son, who faithfully looks to God, trusting and loving Him completely.
1Thessalonians 5 cautions against being misled by those lacking faith in God and His Kingdom to bring true peace and security to mankind. Such will not come merely through scientific advancement or only human power or initiative, but rather by God's blessing through His heavenly and earthly children, doing things God's way in harmony with His word, and seeking God's honor and glory, not man's. Certainly all with genuine faith in God may have a share in supporting God's kingdom and cooperating with it's activities earth-wide to bring about true peace and happiness to mankind. Verses 6-9 offer encouragement to keep our senses regarding such things, safeguarding our hearts and minds, and not be lulled to sleep into faithless inactivity. They read: "So, then, let us not sleep on as the rest do, but let us stay awake and keep our senses. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. 8 But as for us who belong to the day, let us keep our senses and put on the breastplate of faith and love and the hope of salvation as a helmet 9 because God assigned us, not to wrath, but to the acquiring of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ." While Jesus is a vital link to salvation, he acknowledges that he is "Lord to the glory of God the Father." (Phili 2:11). The Kingdom ultimately belongs to Jehovah, and only succeeds through His blessing, power, and love.
