2019 Mar 15 Ecclesiastes 1, Ephesians 5
Welcome to another day, wishing you happiness! Having concluded Proverbs 15 last time, as will occasionally be the case for the rest of this month, let’s look into our substitute book, also written by wise King Solomon, Ecclesiastes, this time chapter 1 verses 5-8. For commentary on verses 1-4 search “Mar 09”.
“5 The sun rises, and the sun sets; Then it hurries back to the place where it rises again. 6 The wind goes south and circles around to the north; Round and round it continuously circles; the wind keeps making its rounds. 7 All the streams flow into the sea, yet the sea is not full. To the place from which the streams flow, there they return so as to flow again. 8 All things are wearisome; No one can even speak of it. The eye is not satisfied at seeing; Nor is the ear filled from hearing.“
Eccle 1:5 Some may claim Solomon is not wisely speaking true science here, but he may merely be relaying how many view the sun’s activity from a human perspective. How does it “hurry back” to it’s place? Does not the night seem to pass quickly, especially when we’re sleeping? We may go to sleep not long after nightfall, and when we awake, here’s the sun again! God himself at times spoke from man’s perspective in the first Bible book, Genesis. For instance, on Day 1, God said “Let there be light.” Our sun had likely already been in existence for aeons of time, yet perhaps dust or something had obscured it’s visibility from earth’s perspective. So God cleared the air, or did whatever necessary to allow the sun’s light to reach the surface of the planet, so that on Day 3 God could cause grass, plants, and trees to sprout. God lovingly understood and spoke from man’s perspective, although we also want to gain God’s perspective on matters, to see things as He sees them. God’s word does help us to do that.
Eccle 1:6 Clearly a wise perspective on the continuous cycles of the wind. We now know the rotation of the earth is largely responsible for the wind’s continuous movement, but Solomon captured the essence of this in the verse.
Eccle 1:7 Another view from God’s perspective, seeing beyond the obvious from man’s limited view. What an amazing water cycle God put in place on our planet! So many rivers used for human and product transport are able to maintain their existence continuously for man’s benefit and provision. We also appreciate the rain cycle to water the land for productive soils. What grand love and wisdom God demonstrated in Earth’s creation!
Eccle 1:8 The Bible itself indicates that God’s word is refreshing, comforting, hope-inspiring, so therefore not wearisome. So Solomon is referring largely to man’s works apart from the Creator. Human activities, sights, and information, especially when ignoring the Creator, may indeed be wearisome to consider, or be inundated with. But when we look at things from God’s perspective, and see His handiwork, for instance His designs in creation, or in the way He made man, both physically and spiritually, giving Him due credit, we may truly be refreshed, and avoid the wearisome effects of ungodly viewpoints. Romans 1:18-21 says “18 For God’s wrath is being revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who are suppressing the truth in an unrighteous way, 19 because what may be known about God is clearly evident among them, for God made it clear to them. 20 For his invisible qualities are clearly seen from the world’s creation onward, because they are perceived by the things made, even his eternal power and Godship, so that they are inexcusable. 21 For although they knew God, they did not glorify him as God nor did they thank him, but they became empty-headed in their reasonings and their senseless hearts became darkened.” Regarding the value of God’s word, Romans 15:4 states: “4 For all the things that were written beforehand were written for our instruction, so that through our endurance and through the comfort from the Scriptures we might have hope.”
Ephesians 5:6-14 contains inspiring words to reject the works of darkness and choose to practice righteousness before God, loving His right ways and standards. Notice these words:
“6 Let no man deceive you with empty words, for because of such things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore, do not be sharers with them; 8 for you were once darkness, but you are now light in connection with the Lord. Go on walking as children of light, 9 for the fruitage of the light consists of every sort of goodness and righteousness and truth. 10 Keep on making sure of what is acceptable to the Lord; 11 and stop sharing in the unfruitful works that belong to the darkness; rather, expose them for what they are. 12 For the things they do in secret are shameful even to mention. 13 Now all the things that are being exposed are made evident by the light, for everything that is being made evident is light. 14 Therefore, it is said: “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and the Christ will shine upon you.””
Therefore, may we cultivate hatred for bad practices that only lead persons away from a close relationships with God and others, and any hope of eternal life with a loyal marriage partner. What marvelous blessings God has in store for humanity, if only we appreciate His love for us and help one another gain in godly wisdom and knowledge in the healthy fear of displeasing God.
