2020 Jun 10-Jun 11 Proverbs 17,CSL Select, TWGA, weekly CTC

UPDATE 6/11-0800 "CTC: AAF added to LICENSE INFO"I would say what happened this morning, but those with evil intentions still need God's love in their life. Nevertheless, Welcome, wishing you well, and a safe and pleasant day, considerate and thoughtful. Today let's continue in Proverbs 17, shift gears and begin examining some Christian Small Letter Selections, consider today's TWGA and this week's CTC Corner.

"4 A wicked man pays attention to hurtful speech, And a deceptive man listens to a malicious tongue. 5 Whoever mocks the poor insults his Maker, And whoever rejoices over another’s disaster will not go unpunished. 6 Grandsons are a crown to the aged, And fathers are the glory of their sons. 7 Upright speech does not befit a fool. How much less does false speech befit a ruler!"

EAR CAUTION. Prove 17:4 What powerful insight! True Christians should turn away from harmful and malicious speech that is harsh, painful, hurting others, including slanderous speech that tears down the reputation of others. Wherever possible, let's feed our minds and hearts on upbuilding, positive speech that loves truth, and encourages and strengthens others, imparting peace and true inner joy.

"5 Whoever mocks the poor insults his Maker, And whoever rejoices over another’s disaster will not go unpunished."

WARNINGS AGAINST PREJUDICE. Prove 17:5 What counsel against prejudice! We should seek to love and respect, or give dignity, to all persons, although we may love more those who love God as we do, as we grow in brotherly affection for one another and we loyally obey God together. (1Pet 1:22) Those who are poor materially or spiritually typically had sad or unfortunate circumstances, that most any person could face in their lifetime. As God's word elsewhere says, "Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep." (Romans 12:15) We should have compassion for one facing such a situation. For instance, such a person may not be aware of services that are locally available for their need. If we can discern that they are sincerely in need of help, with discretion we may choose to help such a person, whether materially, or spiritually, or both. (1John 3:17,18; James 2:15-17)
The Scriptures encourage us to make enough income to care for the needs of ourselves and our family, and a bit to assist someone in need.

"6 Grandsons are a crown to the aged, And fathers are the glory of their sons."

"EVERY FAMILY" Prove 17:6 Sons raised to love God and His ways, and loving their parents and grandparents, bring them due honor. Such parents prayerfully and wisely look to God for direction and guidance in life, and lovingly instruct their children in the right way to live. May families be moved to look to God, "the One to whom every family in heaven and on earth owes its name." (Ephe 3:15).

"7 Upright speech does not befit a fool. How much less does false speech befit a ruler!"

FITTING SPEECH. Prove 17:7 Upright speech is not typical of a foolish person, while we would encourage such a person to humble themselves before God and listen to His counsel and correction. A ruler likewise should not be known for speaking lies. While still using discretion, truthful speech in the wisdom of God is fitting for such a person.

CHRISTIAN SMALL LETTERS (CSL)

CHRISTIAN SMALL LETTER SELECTION

SOME INTRODUCTORY REMARKS TO THE CHRISTIAN COURSE

CHERISH THE "GOOD NEWS," GUARD ASSOCIATION. Galatians 1:6-8 encourages caution regarding our association. These verses show the Scriptures are what we should hold to regarding our faith, our trust and our belief system, not being persuaded by unrighteous ones: "I am amazed that you are so quickly turning away from the One who called you with Christ’s undeserved kindness to another sort of good news. 7 Not that there is another good news; but there are certain ones who are causing you trouble and wanting to distort the good news about the Christ. 8 However, even if we or an angel out of heaven were to declare to you as good news something beyond the good news we declared to you, let him be accursed." May we continue to grow in our understanding of God's word of truth, trusting and clinging to God as our refuge in a world still promoting unrighteousness.

ADHERE TO WHAT IS PURE, ACQUIRE DISCERNMENT. Galatians 2:16 contains the inspired words of the apostle Paul, who said "that a man is declared righteous, not by works of law, but only through faith in Jesus Christ." Our faith in Jesus and his ransom sacrifice, to allow true forgiveness for our sins, moves us out of appreciation to please God fully. Our faith and love for God and Christ move us to be obedient from the heart to their commands, but such obedience cannot "earn" us salvation--everlasting life is a gift from a loving God (Romans 6:23). "The love of God means that we observe His commandments, but His commandments are not burdensome. "(1John 5:3). However, we must not think that obedience to one command will compensate for our disobedience to another. We must strive never to violate what is holy, and be disobedient (James 2:10-13). Some practices can bar us from God's Kingdom (1Cori 6:9,10). We should acquire discernment to see the difference between the more important matters of law, and lesser matters, though still required. In the healthy fear of God, we should seek to hate all badness, while loving what is good, with foresighted shrewdness to see the consequences of both bad and good, and acting accordingly. (Psalm 97:10; Prove 22:3) Our faith in God and Christ can thus grow with divine knowledge, as we consider God's word regularly. (Matth 4:4).

PRESS FORWARD IN SERVING GOD. Galatians 2:17-18 encourages us as ones turning to the truth of God, not to turn back to things we've left behind. The apostle Paul set an example in this regard, having been raised as a Pharisee with great prominence in Judaism, with prospects of easily being well-off materially and otherwise. However, upon learning the truth about Christ, he left a life of falsehood behind to pursue God's favor and the reward of eternal life promised by Him for one's faithful and loving course. (James 1:12). We do not necessarily need to drop everything for the truth, but we should take a fresh look at our life and adjust or do away with anything detracting us from serving God faithfully. Paul referred to the "excelling value of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord," and considered his past pursuits as "a lot of refuse," that he may gain Christ. (Phili 3:8). True worship of Jehovah through Christ opens our eyes to the truth, and as we grow in divine wisdom, we are better able to assess what is truly important in life and adjust our life accordingly. (Phili 1:10). We should turn to God in prayer before making any rash decisions, however. Look to God for guidance and direction, as we 'let our reasonableness become known to all men.' (Phili 4:5). God will nevertheless bless us for any sacrifice we make for the sake of His name and purpose, that enables us to move forward in serving God, and not turn back to a sinful course in life. Galatians 2:17-18 reads this way: "Now if we have also been found sinners while seeking to be declared righteous by means of Christ, is Christ then sin’s minister? Certainly not! 18 If the very things that I once tore down I build up again, I demonstrate that I am a transgressor." Paul added in verse 20: "Indeed, the life that I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and handed himself over for me." May we appreciate the loving, selfless spirit Christ displayed in his earthly life course, seeking the everlasting happiness of all willing humans, as described in the Holy Scriptures, and seek to follow this example. (1Peter 2:21).

THRICE WEEKLY GOLDEN APPLES (TWGA)

Following up on last week's CPR instruction, let's consider some preventative heart health information. Since there is a connection between heart and brain health, giving such matters attention may bring many benefits. Here is an article that I may print here:

HEALTHY HABITS HELP YOUR HEART AND BRAIN

( NewsUSA) – A healthy heart has many benefits, but did you know that a healthy brain is one of them?Brain health and heart health are closely connected, and forging healthy lifestyle habits at any age will help keep both your brain and your heart at peak performance.According to a recent survey from the American Heart Association, the greatest challenges adults in the United States face to maintain heart and brain health are stress and poor diet. The American Heart Association conducted a market research survey of 2,000 adults across three age groups, including Generation X (aged 40-54 years), Millennials (ages 23-39 years), and Generation Z (18-22 years). The survey found that, overall, fewer than half of the adults surveyed rated their brain health as "very good or excellent." The same survey also found that 1 in 4 respondents said they were unaware of the connection between heart health and brain health. In addition, the youngest adults (Generation Z) reported significantly lower levels of emotional well-being and brain health compared to older generations. But it is never too early or too late to try these tips to improve your health.* Eat smart. Research suggests that a cup of greens each day may slow brain aging and eating fish such as tuna and salmon can help maintain emotional balance and reduce inflammation from heart disease.* Sleep well. Sleep lets the brain learn and grow; aim for seven to nine hours a night for optimal health and to allow your brain to process all of the thinking and learning from a day.* Get moving. Physical activity is as good for the brain as it is for the whole body. Data shows that exercise increases a protein in the brain that impacts learning and memory. Aim to be active for 150 minutes per week to reap the benefits of a stronger body and mind. In essence, the more you move, the healthier your brain.* Stay connected. Making social connections strengthens the brain, so make time for your friends and family. Make it a priority to connect with someone at least once a week, whether in person or by phone. The American Heart Association is the world’s leading voluntary organization focused on heart and brain health.Visit heart.org for more information and tips from the American Heart Association on living a longer and healthier life.

MORE ESSENTIALS. Also, I am aware of four primary minerals essential for the heart's muscle function. These are common minerals found in our diet, and they are: Potassium, Sodium, Calcium and Magnesium. Most fruits and vegetables are an excellent source of potassium, including bananas and potatoes, and TWGA not long ago carried information about maintaining the body's potassium-sodium balance. Celery is an excellent source of "organic" or body usable and beneficial sodium--it should be included often wherever possible, and may actually assist the body's metabolism of inorganic salt. Dairy products are generally an excellent source of proper dietary calcium, but it may also be found in grains and other foods. Last, but definitely not least, is magnesium. This mineral is essential, involved in some 300 enzyme processes in the body. Some years ago I found research and studies that indicated that it was the number 1 deficiency in the U.S. diet, and it's lack may have been responsible for many heart-health events. Certain foods are good sources, and should be made a regular part of our diet wherever possible. These include bananas, potatoes, kiwis, many fish and seafood selections, many beans and greens, and some supplemental ocean algae products. You might research this matter, and find delicious ways to incorporate such foods into your menu! Also, Psalm 104:15 may clue us in on another important source for maintaining heart health, in listing gifts from God: "...Oil that makes the face shine, And bread that sustains the heart of mortal man." We should likely then include heart-healthy grains into our diet in one way or another, preferably organic or non-GMO.

COME TO CONSENSUS CORNER

Week 14: ISSUE BY ISSUE ADDRESSED BY GOD’S KINGDOM: Drunk Driving

ALCOHOL’S EFFECTS. While deaths caused by drunk driving may have been dropping a little over the past few years, most would agree that more needs to be done. Each year, in the United States, over 10,000 people lose their lives to an accident caused by at least one person driving drunk. It is well established that drinking alcohol lowers a person’s inhibitions, or restraints. In other words, alcohol allows the brain to relax, and to a degree, to let loose. This letting loose contributes to many temporarily becoming more outgoing, social. Wine is thus presented in God's word as a gift to man. Among other things provided by God, Psalm 104:15 then mentions "And wine that makes man's heart rejoice, Oil that makes the face shine, And bread that sustains the heart of mortal man." Yet as with many gifts, this one can also be abused. Upon such drinking, while people may thus say things they wouldn’t ordinarily say, their conduct can also be affected. If then attempting to drive, for instance, they may take risks they wouldn’t ordinarily take, and make poorer judgments. But that is not all—the more alcohol that is consumed, physical coordination and motor skills also decline. People become less able to handle the myriad decisions that are required to safely operate a motor vehicle. Their reaction time is dramatically affected, causing them to take longer, even much longer, to respond to sudden occurrences as happen often when driving a vehicle on public roadways. All the while, many of these persons somehow still believe they are just as capable of driving as they normally are without alcohol in their system. What a false sense of security!

BLOOD-ALCOHOL LEVELS. While much research could be done into various sources of alcohol, and whether some drinks have more of an affect than others, the bottom line usually is found in the amount of alcohol that enters the bloodstream, which can be measured as a BAC level, standing for Blood-Alcohol-Concentration. For U.S. states, typically 0.08% BAC will result in a DUI, or Driving Under the Influence charge if suspected of drunk driving or involved in an accident. Federal law set this as a minimum to define drunk driving, and for commercial drivers the level is 0.04% that can result in a conviction. Most states also now have even stiffer penalties for exceeding higher limits, such as 0.15% BAC. Being able to recognize that it was a drunk driver that caused a serious accident is one thing, but now what can be done about this ongoing catastrophe? One person dies in the U.S. on average every 50 minutes from a motor vehicle incident involving a drunk driver. About 10% of these are pedestrians. And on a typical weekend night, alcohol is involved in some 50% of deaths involving motor vehicles! Many of us may be taking this matter a little too lightly--who of us would like to be responsible for such a tragedy??? While the resurrection will restore innocent life and people can be mercifully forgiven, God’s Kingdom will not allow this to continue! How can this be remedied? We might start by making sure we're educated about how blood-alcohol levels are affected by drinking. Those going out for drinks might consider finding a BAC Calculator app for their phone or other device, helping to gain understanding as to how various drinks affect these levels per gender and body weight. For example, if two servings give someone a BAC of 0.04%, which is a level that can cause "impaired driving," each hour this typically drops by 0.015%, so in two hours the level would be approximately 0.01%, much better for most driving. What else can be done?

DESIGNATED DRIVERS. One matter that could quickly be instituted, wherever this is not already practiced, is to require bar and restaurant attendants to request from a group of customers eager to consume alcoholic beverages to identify their “designated drivers.” These individuals may choose to refrain from any alcoholic beverage, or may be allowed a beverage or two, depending on body weight, and length of stay, be it a can of beer, a glass of wine, or a shot of strong drink. These each deliver on average about the same amount of alcohol. Having identified these individuals, a waiter or waitress can keep an eye on them, to support their determination to remain capable of driving safely upon leaving. DD’s should take their responsibility seriously, knowing that authorities may be contacted if they violate their proper limits. These should be able to choose from a fine selection of non-alcoholic beverages to enjoy on this occasion. Some restaurants might even offer a discount on such beverages to these designated drivers, to encourage safe practices, but at least having these drinks made available demonstrates support for this arrangement.Where taxis are widely available, an outing may be planned both coming and going, so an entire group might share more freely in their alcohol consumption.

LICENSE INFORMATION. Another matter that can be addressed is that of information available on Driver’s Licenses. Are not drinkers carded to ensure proper age? While licenses typically have information used to positively identify someone, such as a face, eye color and height, one thing is often missing that can help someone to know how much alcohol can be consumed—a person’s weight! While there are a few factors involved, still we find typically that a larger, heavier person can handle a bit more alcohol than a smaller, lighter person. Also, it has come to my attention that there are some individuals on planet Earth that are able to handle alcohol much better than the average human--their BAC is not affected the same as others. Therefore, besides a weight indication on a person's license, there might also be shown an AAF--Alcohol Assimilation Factor--perhaps from between 1 and 3. A level of 3 would indicate the person can handle at least three times the amount of alcohol as the normal person. There can be some provision put in place for a person to have their BAC tested, perhaps at the local DMV, to indicate the proper factor on their license. In general, a person's weight can be a good guide. While weight can change over time, most people tend to remain within a certain range. An easy standard could be set at 10%. If your weight changes and is expected to remain at least 10% higher or lower than what would currently be on your license, then a new license could be obtained, reflecting the change. A person’s weight can easily be determined, in case the new license hasn’t been received yet, or if there is reason to believe it is substantially different than what is stated on the license. Generally, then, three or four different standards could be set, one for those weighing approximately 150 lbs, then 200 lbs, and 250 lbs. Then anyone 300 lbs or more could hold to a standard set for 300. Restaurants can look at the typical alcohol content of each of it’s beverages, and establish reasonable drinking limits based on body weight. They could then help their patrons avoid going beyond these reasonable limits, as the alcohol begins to impair the judgment of those consuming it. Also, if a group plans to spend considerable time on this occasion, could they be offered a pitcher of an inexpensive supplemental non-alcoholic beverage at a fair price, to potentially reduce the risk of heavy drinking?

LABELLING. And why couldn’t pre-packaged alcoholic beverages be labelled with recommended limits based on these weight guidelines? A beverage might say that anyone planning to drive limit themselves to a single beverage serving or two, depending on body weight, while recommending numbers such as 3-4-5 serving limits for instance, each for a 150lb, 200lb, and 250lb consumer. These could show amounts recommended over a certain period of time, long enough for the alcohol typically to be processed by the body and leave the system. If this was required by law on all alcoholic beverage products, according to clear guidelines, then no company would gain an unfair or unscrupulous economic advantage by ignoring such a life-promoting practice. Thus, with a little help, people can come to realize what it means in actual practice to drink responsibly.

MOTIVATION. How gratifying to everyone if statistics for drunk driving accidents could be compiled and made available to the public more quickly than 6 months after a year’s data is received! Let’s make ways to share and compile this data more quickly, perhaps state by state, so we can begin to monitor the success of these endeavors and make needed adjustments wherever necessary. To further protect innocent lives, we might also arrange for the government to subsidize the cost of a taxi ride for anyone who winds up in a situation in which they haven't the funds but refuse to drive home after having too much alcohol to drink, as well as the ride the next day if needed to obtain their vehicle. Restaurants and bars should gladly allow such a vehicle to remain in their lot overnight in such situations. Even if a parking ticket must be paid along a city street, this should in no way be considered equitable to the risk of innocent life.

CONCLUSION

WHAT DELIGHT! As we see the number of accidents and deaths drop dramatically, how delighted we will be to the praise of our loving Father, Jehovah! He hates to see the innocent suffer—why He even takes no delight in someone wicked having to die! As Ezekiel 18:23 says: “23 “‘Do I take any delight at all in the death of someone wicked,’ is the utterance of the Sovereign Lord Jehovah, ‘[and] not in that he should turn back from his ways and actually keep living?’” May we be determined never to become guilty of risking the precious lives of others by getting behind the wheel of a vehicle after going beyond proper limits of an alcoholic beverage. And may we rejoice to see the day when God's word is fulfilled in saying, such as at Isaiah 25:8-9: " He will swallow up death forever, And the Sovereign Lord Jehovah will wipe away the tears from all faces. The reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, For Jehovah himself has spoken it. 9 In that day they will say:“Look! This is our God! We have hoped in him, And he will save us. This is Jehovah! We have hoped in him. Let us be joyful and rejoice in the salvation by him.”
